Top 10 things CFOs can do to attract Millennial talent

Full name
June 27, 2023

As we approach 2025, it's important to keep in mind the changing demographics of the workforce. By then, Millennials, born between 1980-2000, will comprise 75% of it. This means that the work preferences, culture, and tools are going to shift, and it's vital for companies to adapt to these changes to attract top talent.

Millennials are different from previous generations in many ways. They value work-life balance, flexibility, and meaningful work over high salaries and fancy job titles. They value a company's culture and mission as much as the job itself, and they demand access to the latest technology and tools. To attract and retain millennials, here are the top 10 things CFOs can do:

  1. Provide autonomy and flexibility - Millennials value autonomy and work-life balance more than previous generations. Offering flexible work options such as remote work, flexible scheduling and unlimited personal time off can be an incentive for millennials.
  2. Create a strong company culture - Company culture is a key factor in attracting millennials. Companies should promote openness, transparency, and collaboration. They should also foster a diverse and inclusive workplace that values respect, empathy, and integrity.
  3. Embrace technology - Millennials are digital natives and expect access to the latest software and tools. Companies need to provide them with the technology they need to work efficiently, such as cloud-based tools, collaboration platforms, and mobile apps.
  4. Promote continuous learning - Millennials value professional development and opportunities to learn and grow. Companies that provide ongoing training and development opportunities will attract and retain top millennial talent.
  5. Offer mentorship and coaching - Millennials value mentorship and feedback. Providing them with the resources and guidance they need to succeed can help build loyalty and retention.
  6. Encourage work-life integration - Millennials value work-life integration instead of work-life balance. This means providing them with the flexibility to blend work and personal life seamlessly, such as offering on-site gyms, daycare, and wellness programs.
  7. Offer competitive compensation - While not the top priority for most millennials, competitive compensation remains a key factor. Companies that offer competitive salaries, bonuses, and benefits packages will attract the best millennial talent.
  8. Prioritize social responsibility - Millennials are socially and environmentally conscious and prefer to work for companies that share their values. Companies that prioritize social responsibility by supporting charitable causes, sustainability initiatives, and diversity and inclusion will appeal to millennials.
  9. Emphasize purpose-driven work - Millennials want to work for companies that provide meaningful work and have a clearly defined mission statement. They want assurances that their work has a positive impact on society.
  10. Foster a strong employer brand - Millennials value transparency and authenticity. Companies can build a strong employer brand by showcasing their values, culture, and mission. They can leverage social media, video, and other marketing channels to highlight what sets their company apart and why millennials should want to work there. A strong employer brand can help attract top talent and build a sense of loyalty among employees.
